Michelle Stafford is in familiar territory in Genoa City.

As Michelle Stafford gears up to mark three decades as the iconic Phyllis Summers on Young and the Restless, the question arises – can Phyllis truly change? With the show revisiting the tangled triangle involving Phyllis, Danny, and Christine,SoapsSpoiler.Com took the opportunity to inquire about Phyllis’s capacity for transformation on a recent red-carpet event.

In the late 1990s, Danny (Michael Damian) won custody of his son Daniel after discovering Phyllis’s deceitful machinations. Michelle Stafford, who portrays Phyllis, was questioned about the character’s ability to evolve given her complex history. Despite Phyllis’s past actions, why is Danny surprisingly kind to her today?

Stafford suggests that Danny harbors guilt, empathizing with Phyllis’s situation. “I think [Danny] has guilt. He felt guilt that he doesn’t feel the same way [as Phyllis does]. She was in love [with him] and now, she’s in love again.”

While Danny may prefer a friendly ex-wife dynamic, Phyllis’s relentless pursuit of him continues. Stafford believes that Phyllis is seeking something she currently lacks in her life, attempting to recapture a beautiful time from her past. Humans, as the actress points out, often cling to moments of joy.

In recent episodes, Phyllis narrowly avoided imprisonment for her involvement in Jeremy Stark’s shenanigans. The question looms: will she learn from this and choose a virtuous path, or will she move heaven and earth to win Danny back? According to Stafford, change is possible for Phyllis, but it requires significant effort, responsibility, and the willingness to swallow one’s pride. Stafford asserts, “I believe that people are basically good, and they [sometimes] go down a bad path.”
